Dr. Naru DeWinter was a scientist who was working for a company called Taggert's Labs. During her employment there, she was involved in an accident during an experiment which transformed her into one of her biggest fears; A bug! Because of her mutation, she developed green textured skin and dragonfly wings along with enhanced physical attributes. This event took place roughly one year before the Qularr invasion of Millennium City and Naru has since discovered a serum which allows her to alter her physical appearance. The person who was responsible for her transformation was her best friend, Dylan Archer, and she was not his only creation. There are others out there just like her who are seeking a cure, and although she'd rather go fishing, Naru has made it her personal mission to find them and give them the serum!

Dr. Dylan Archer was not only a co-worker of Dr. Naru DeWinter, but he was also her best friend at one time. However, this would all change after he became jealous of the time Naru was spending with her work. He thought that her work was getting in the way of their relationship, and due to his selfishness, he was determined to make somebody pay. Unfortunately, he chose to take his frustration out on Naru herself and arranged for an experiment to backfire on her. His goal was to mutate her DNA in hopes that she would then turn to him for help and comfort, but his plan failed. Not only did he lose his profession as a well known and respected geneticist, but he also lost his friend in the process and has aimed his anger at the occupants of Monster Island!

Calix is a Qularr insectoid who was one of Dr. Dylan Archer's first creations on a project which gave him the titled of Experiment 01436-V8. Upon completing of the many experiments which were done to his body, he managed to escape Archer's lab and realized that he was now bigger, stronger and a lot smarter than the average Qularr. Afterwards, he assembled a group of villains on Monster Island and planned to conquer both the human and Qularr race, but much like his creator, he fell for Dr. Naru Winter and became a weak-minded criminal. His plan is for Naru to become the swarm queen to his hive in order to breed more powerful Qularr hybrids in order to help him take over the world!

Dr. Grace Deacon was once Dylan Archer's lab assistant and girl Friday. She was always on top of things and anything he ever needed was already there for him. At the time, Archer didn't realize that Deacon thought of him as Mr. Right and was madly in love with him. She thought of him as an intelligent, attractive and wealthy man and for here these were all the qualities of a perfect man. The only problem was that Archer only had eyes for his co-worker, Dr. Naru DeWinter and this made Grace extremely jealous. Though Naru wasn't interested in Archer in that way, Grace thought of her as a no good, boyfriend stealing, ugly hag and so she resented her very much for this. She felt that she had worked far too long and hard to get this close to Archer and has since decided to turn to the dark magic which had been in her family for generations in order to extract revenge on Naru!
